On Sunday, May 22nd, Mill Street Loft collaborated with the First Congregational Church of Poughkeepsie to honor three students from the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft’s Poughkeepsie Youth Challenge. Chris Cortez, Imani Jones, and Elvis Ricketts of Poughkeepsie High School were honored for successfully completing four years in the program. Each student beat the odds, graduated from high school, navigated the inner city, and are now enrolled in college. Chris will be attending Dutchess Community College, Imani is enrolled at Maine College of Art, and Elvis will be studying at SUNY Potsdam. This is a huge achievement.
The selfless nature of each of these students and their powerful stories of triumph led the First Congregational Church to host this event which served as a fundraising dinner for the students. All the food, space, and staff were donated so that the funds raised will go directly to the students’ college education. Donations, artwork sales, and ticket sales will help each student pay for college.
A special thank you goes to the Patrons, Supporters, guests, and volunteers and chefs who supported this event and made it a huge success. If you were unable to attend, but would like to still support these students’ education, please consider a donation towards the cause: http://millstreetloft.org/product/donate-2/ .
