Beacon Creative Arts Pre-school

Mill Street Loft’s Beacon Creative Arts Pre-school (BCAP) is located at 8 Long Dock Road, Beacon, at Scenic Hudson’s River Center in Long Dock Park.

The River Center is the new Southern Dutchess satellite location for Mill Street Loft, providing year-round creative and innovative arts programming for children and adults in a newly restored historic barn on the waterfront of Beacon. This location provides a beautiful setting, environmental park grounds and inspiring Hudson River views for our preschool and other arts programs.

BCAP’s philosophy is to take a developmental approach toward each child. Recognizing the value of play for learning, the program aims to foster the child’s optimum social, emotional, physical and intellectual development in a supportive, nurturing, creative and happy environment.

At Mill Street Loft’s BCAP we provide social, motor and creative experiences that excite a love for learning, music, sculpture, painting, drawing, language and creative movement. We foster creative problem solving and empower children to feel proud of and safe in the environment that they develop. We provide opportunities for children to explore their unique art-making and take an idea and make it their own. By recycling and using non-toxic materials, we demonstrate care for our classroom, its students and the environment. Children learn to understand and take care of the world around them and the community in which they live.

ART We explore art from primitive cave painting, using charcoal and mud as first art materials to modern collage, sculpture and paint application. We make our own egg tempera and paint on plaster. We learn about art history. Why did Picasso paint with blue?

MUSIC We explore simple beat and rhythms. What was the first beat we heard? (heart beat). Rhythms, animal walking. We sing songs, make up our own songs, make instruments and create a small orchestra. We listen to Beethoven, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky for example.

LANGUAGE We explore our own language and other languages of the world. French, Spanish, Chinese, sign language. We write stories and learn about alphabets and other written languages.

MOVEMENT We dance, exercise, do yoga and just keep moving in the classroom and outside.
