“Hudson River Ruins: Forgotten Landmarks of the American Landscape”
A Public Lecture and Photo Presentation
at Scenic Hudson’s River Center in Beacon
Friday Night, April 13th

Mill Street Loft Arts (MSL Arts) at Scenic Hudson’s River Center located at 8 Long Dock Road at Long Dock Park on the Beacon, NY Waterfront presents “Hudson Valley Ruins:  Forgotten Landmarks of the American Landscape” on Friday, April 13th from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. This special lecture and photographic presentation features authors and photographers Thomas E. Rinaldi and Robert J. Yasinsac – authors of the “Hudson Valley Ruins” book.

The presentation will focus on the many abandoned historic buildings, structures and homes throughout the Hudson Valley, giving the public a brief history on each site and their current condition today.  The authors will discuss the proposed demolition and renovation of these historic treasures and give the public information on how to find and visit many of the locations.

This lecture will take place at Scenic Hudson’s newly renovated River Center building on the Beacon Waterfront – a former Hudson Valley Ruin and current Southern Dutchess location for Scenic Hudson and Mill Street Loft Arts programming.  There is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Mill Street Loft Students Receive National Recognition

Scholastic National Winners, Artsonia Winner, and Scholarship Winners Announced!

Mill Street Loft Arts located at 45 Pershing Avenue in Poughkeepsie, NY and with their second location at Scenic Hudson’s River Center at Long Dock Park in Beacon, is pleased to announce that several students enrolled in the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft have received prestigious awards and recognitions over the past few months.

Artsonia, the largest student art museum in the world, chose Art Institute of Mill Street Loft student Emily Adamo’s, from Valley Central H.S., piece, “Important Things”, to be one of only 500 pieces nationwide to be displayed on the Big Screen Plaza on the Avenue of Americas in New York City during the National Art Educators Convention.

In the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards, Helen Sywalski, from Monticello H.S. received a Gold Key for her piece, Pharmaceuticals created for our Senior Project course. While Jessica Jones, from John Jay H.S. also won a Silver Key for her Portfolio Development IV abstract piece, Bicycle. Their work was singled out from over 200,000 entries. “With over 200,000 submissions from students in grades 7-12, this year’s competition attracted more participants than ever before.  Virginia Mc Enerney, the Executive Director of the Alliance, noted that, “After meeting these students and viewing their work, you can’t help but feel optimistic and excited about the future of America’s creative leadership.”  Students’ works were blindly judged, first locally through the 116 affiliates of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers (the non-profit organization presenting the awards) and then nationally by panels of judges comprised of renowned artists, authors, educators, and industry professionals.” The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford and Joyce Carol Oates.

Special congratulations go to Art Institute of Mill Street Loft seniors for being awarded numerous scholarships to college.   Isaac Toonkel, of Millbrook H.S. has received scholarships to Savannah College of Art and Design, Mass Art, and Columbus College of Art & Design. Megan Parker, of Roy C. Ketcham H.S. has received scholarships to University of Hartford, Monserrat, and Chester College, Alexis Volpe, of Arlington H.S. received scholarships to The Art Institute of Boston, Mass Art, and PrattMWP,  Jackie Pfleger, of Arlington H.S. has received a scholarship to Monserrat College of Art, Bruno Cohen, of New Paltz H.S. has received a scholarship to PrattMWP and Gaelen McCartney, of Newburgh Free Academy has received scholarships to School of the Art Institute of Chicago, VCUArts, Temple University and Alfred University.

The Art Institute of Mill Street Loft is designed for motivated, artistically and career-minded teens ages 14 – 19 to help develop their ideas and build skills in the visual arts. Mill Street Loft believes that every student should be given a firm foundation to build upon. Every course is taught by working professional artists in the field who approach teaching from a mentor position. In the last 12 years graduates of the Art Institute of Mill Street Loft have received offers of more than $24,000,000 in merit based scholarships to college. Exposure Opening Reception

The National Art Honor Society of The Art Institute of Mill Street Loft located at 45 Pershing Avenue in Poughkeepsie is pleased to present Exposure, their 9th Annual National Juried High School Photography Exhibition in their galleries from Saturday, March 31 – Saturday, May 5th.  An opening reception for the artists and public will take place in Gallery 45 on Saturday, March 31st from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. This years Exposure exhibition brings together original photographs by talented high school students from throughout the Northeast.  This is a diverse and powerful professional juried show. The distinguished panel of judges for Exposure 2012 included professional photographers Michele Muir, Al Nowak and John Rizzo.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect to see an interesting variety of black & white, color and digital images that clearly display the daring and unique artistic abilities of young photographers.  A special awards ceremony featuring cash prizes and other recognition awards for demonstration of exceptional ability, originality, mastery of the medium and creativity will take place at the opening reception.

76 images were selected from 285 entries by students from New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts. The following students were selected to participate in Exposure 2012; Alexis Agnew, Eva Anderson, Lauren Asselmeyer, Stevie Borrello, Jamie Briscoe, Esa Cana Stephanie Catalioto, Michael Chen, Katie Court, Philip Curran, Taylor DeMarco, Allison Diaz, Colleen Doelger, Nicolas Doolittle, Max Ginesin, Danielle Goldberg, Tracy Guo, Devyn Halte, Jacqueline Harlow, Sarah Hoagland, Sarah Kaplan, Jaime Kent, Rachel Krom, Jayna Labrie, Jingyi Liu, Hang Liu, Kaitlyn Locke, Bridget McCabe, Patrick McCormack, Megan Parker, Sandy Ni, Alexandra Pittman, John Ralston and Peter Vorstadt. The students attend the following schools; The Art Institute of Mill Street Loft,Oakwood Friends School, Eldred HS, Liberty HS, Marlboro HS, Millbrook HS, Arlington HS, John Jay HS, Ketcham HS, Beacon HS, Cornwall HS, Highland HS, Red Hook HS, Washingtonville HS, New Paltz HS, Monroe Woodbury HS, Cornwall Central HS, Kingston HS, Hampshire Regional HS, MA and Putnam Valley HS

A number of the students accepted into the Exposure exhibition are students at the Art Institute at Mill Street Loft, a Pre-college Portfolio Development Program for motivated, career-minded teens in the visual arts.  The Art Institute helps teens develop their ideas and build skills in the arts. Students learn how to strengthen their portfolios and explore advanced art techniques, presentation, critique, skills development, composition, emotionalism and art theory.  Through courses such as Portfolio Development, Figure Drawing, Traditional and Digital Photography, Sculpture, and a Senior Project class, students are exposed to variety of media and advanced art. Courses are held year around in fall and spring semesters with a summer art intensive during the summer.
